Engines for ’63 Catalina’s produced as much or more power than any other car then driving on the highways. The larger ’63 Catalina cars were stocked with 389 cubic inch engines capable of producing 410 horsepower of thrust. Because of the high speeds these cars consistently reached in short periods of time, suggestions on the street were made that the 389 could produce 500 or even 550 horsepower of thrust.
And is wasn’t as if Pontiac didn’t already have a legacy of power leading into the 1963 Catalina, which was the most powerful model yet, because models during the previous two years had met with great successes both at NASCAR races and on drag strips.
