The Pontiac Catalina 1963 Was Before its Class in Fashion, Elegance

Admittedly, the U.S. automobile industry is competitive beyond belief, and few cars seem to totally outdistance the crowd in any given year. But, occasionally there are exceptions when totally innovative body styles and high-powered engines set some makes of vehicle apart, and one such car was the Pontiac Catalina 1963.

Pontiac manufactured nearly 235,000 Catalina’s in 1963 representing seven different models of vehicles. Look at a ’63 Catalina today and one still sees the features that made it a major hit nearly a half-century back.

Styling and luxury were the trademarks of the Catalina that year when the automobile combined clean, square lines with an angled roof. Other distinguishing characteristics included upward curving taillights and recessed split grilles. Other visual features included full-length body moldings and what looked to be unusually small hubcaps.

Factory prices for the beautiful car ranged from $2,725 for the two-door sedan to $3,300 for the convertible. Among the seven models offered to the public, Pontiac manufactured more four-door sedans, at 80,000 vehicles, than any of the other versions. The four-door sedan, at $2,795, sold for only $70 more than the two-door sedan.

One thing that made the ‘63 Catalina so popular in addition to its great looks and power was the fact they were marketed in the same price range as Chevy Impalas, Ford Galaxies, and the Dodge 880.

As far as power under the hood, the engines were among the most powerful on the road at that time. With a wheelbase of 120”, some versions were equipped with high-powered 389 cubic inch engines known to produce 410 horsepower. Because of the high speeds these cars consistently reached in short periods of time, suggestions on the street were made that the 389 could produce 500 or even 550 horsepower of thrust.

Huge successes at NASCAR races and on drag strips the previous two years set the stage for the even more powerful ‘63 Catalina.

Although buying a Convertible cars undoubtedly would be expensive almost a half century after it was first manufactured, anyone interested in the vehicle can go online and buy a 1:18 scale Precision Die-Cast Replica of the car at an extremely reasonable price.
